2010 ILLINOIS EMERGING WRITERS COMPETITION
 
Open to Illinois writers over age 18, entry forms and rules can be found at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_publications/Ida96.pdf
 
There is $20 per submission charge from which prizes will be awarded.  Three cash prizes of $500, $300, and $100 will awarded in two categories. 
 
Illinois poet laureate Kevin Stein will select winners of the Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award, and Kaylie Jones, the accomplished writer and daughter of James Jones, will pick the winners of the James Jones Short Story Award. 
 
Competiton runs through June 30, and it is sponsored by Illinois Center for the Book and Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White.

Writing for Children Is Hard Work
      Many folks mistakenly think it might be easier to write for children than adults.  Not so.  Publishers of stories, articles, and books for children demand that the writing must be enticing, accurate, and appropriate for young readers.  Anyone who respects children knows this market is too important for sloppy work.
